AEE NCC serves 23 jurisdictions, including suburban, urban, and rural areas, ranging from 10,000 to more than one million residents.

Geographically, the area encompasses Washington, DC and its surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia constituting the 6th largest metropolitan region in the US.  The US Green Building Council recently named The District at the first LEED Platinum City in the world.  Additionally, Maryland and Virginia both rank in the top 10 for LEED certified buildings per Capita.

The National Capital Chapter’s territory is at the forefront of energy efficiency and sustainability.  Local policies and Federal initiatives have established the region as a leader in reducing energy waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

Our territory encompasses many of the top ranked colleges and universities in the country.  The National Capital Chapter has student chapters at George Washington University, the University of Maryland and George Mason University.

This region has been also recognized as the largest science and engineering workforce of any metropolitan region in the United States.  The population is ranked nationally as among the nations most diverse, affluent and highly educated.  Our local economy is driven by the Federal government, defense contracting, information technology, and a rapidly expanding biotechnology sector.  Many Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in the region including Fannie Mae, Lockheed Martin, Capital One, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman among many others.
