Shady Grove Medical Center Central Plant

We are delighted to invite you to join us for a tour and luncheon hosted by the Association of Energy Engineers National Capital Chapter on Wednesday, June 14th, starting at 11:00 am at the recently completed innovative energy efficiency upgrades to the Central Plant for Shady Grove Medical Center(SGMC) in Rockville, Maryland.

The tour will provide an opportunity to learn more about the energy-efficient systems and sustainable practices that have been implemented at this location.  Adventist Healthcare (SGMC), one of the areas most premier health care providers recently expanded the existing infrastructure central plant to include meeting demand for a new 150,352 square-foot patient care tower.  The new six floor tower is a symbol of Adventist’s commitment to the well-being of the community.

Tour highlights will include:

– The 7.5MW backup generation that replaced the previous 3.8MW of backup generation
o   Included and electrical upgrade of the hospital and central plant to 1 PEPCO service with 2  feeds
o   Included adding the central plant equipment to backup power
– Expansion of the existing chilled water system
o   Chillers, pumps and cooling towers to be more energy efficient and include the increased  capacity to serve the demand of the new Hospital Tower
o   Installation of a new 250-ton absorption chiller
– Implementation of 2.2MW combined heat and power
o   Installation just being completed
o   Estimated to save $1M in annual utility costs
o   Eligible for nearly $3M in incentives

Engineering staff will present best practices and lessons learned during the upgrades on the tour and during the luncheon that will immediately follow.

Each tour participant is asked to bring their own hard hat and eye protection.  Also required is closed toed shoes and long sleeves and long pants.
