5th Annual CWEEL Clean Energy & Sustainability Extravaganza

South East Chapter

The Association of Energy Engineers-National Capital Chapter (AEE NCC) and Leaders in Energy (LE) invite you to join us for this very special event. CWEEL supports the role of women in the energy and environmental industries. It assists in career development activities for existing professionals, and also enables young women aspiring to leadership roles to find mentors that will support their own development. The day’s theme is “Getting to Net Zero impact in Energy, Carbon, Water, and Waste.”.
​The major event highlights include: a luncheon panel of women leaders who will share career tips as well as information on opportunities in the cleantech industry; a keynote address by Todd LaPorte GMU School of Public Policy – Big Picture on Getting to Zero Emissions – The Energy Transition; A Three-University (GMU, GWU, & UMD) panel wherein school representatives will share their efforts working towards clean energy, zero waste, and efficient water use. In addition, business sponsors of the event will showcase and speak about new ideas, technologies, products, and services; finally there will be an evening reception featuring door prizes and commaraderie to round out the day.

Ida Namur is a Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) with 15 years of experience in the environmental consulting field. At AECOM, Ida manages multidisciplinary teams of technical experts from all of AECOM’s business lines across the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific to create custom solutions for clients in the power, energy and life sciences market sectors. Ida works with both private sector and federal government clients in the US and abroad and is especially interested in projects that apply innovative solutions to complex sustainability challenges. Ida currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Capital Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers. Originally from Norway, Ida came to the US in 1999 for college and obtained a B.S. degree in Environmental Science from Hawaii Pacific University.

As Director of the Program Management office for DCSEU, Ms. Girma supports the needs and concerns of business owners by offering energy efficient solutions when they are faced with high utility costs. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stony Brook University, where she graduated in 2006. Solome received her Master of Science degree in Environmental and Energy Management at GW in 2012.
Annika Moman

Annika leads the Power & Energy Services Business for AECOM, providing comprehensive energy services to utilities and public and private sector users, including distributed generation, gas utilities, smart energy, and energy efficiency retrofit projects. She has been in the energy industry for 15years, with experience including energy master planning and Energy Savings Performance Contracting. Prior to working in the energy field, Ms Moman was a Marine Corps logistics officer. She holds Mechanical Engineering degrees from the US Naval Academy and San Diego State University.
Nadia Rhazi Khawar

In her role as Program Manager, Nadia directly engages with project sponsors to determine their eligibility, terms, and structuring for OPIC debt financing, provides research and analytical support to deal teams structuring clean energy projects, and manages external and internal reporting for energy deals and programs across the agency. Nadia joined OPIC in 2015 from the Department of Energy‘s Office of International Affairs, where she spent three years as a Senior Advisor on Latin America and Caribbean. Nadia has a Masters of Public Policy degree from U.C. Berkeley, where she focused on energy and environmental policy, and a Bachelors in Political Science/International Affairs from UCLA.
Lindsey Robinett Shaw, LEED AP® O+M, EEP

Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection
Ms. Shaw wanages energy and sustainability programs within the Division of Environmental Policy & Compliance of the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, including programs to encourage energy efficiency and renewable energy, including energy financing policies and programs; climate change initiatives; support for residential and commercial sustainability-related practices; and planning and research efforts focused on developing, expanding, and improving DEP programs. Lindsey holds a Master’s of Science Degree in Energy Policy and Climate from Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. in Environmental Analysis and Policy fron Boston Universsity

Todd M. La Porte

George Mason University.
Todd M. La Porte is an associate professor in the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. His current research interests include climate change adaptation policy and governance, organizational and social resiliency.  He has also worked on governance and the use and impacts of networked information technologies, public attitudes to technology and homeland security, critical infrastructure protection, and organizational responses to extreme events. La Porte teaches courses on climate change adaptation policy; global political economy; critical infrastructures and extreme events; global Internet public policy; technology and institutional change; and culture, organizations and technology. Before coming to George Mason, La Porte was a member of the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, where he was associate professor. La Porte received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale University in 1989, and his B.A, in sociology and political science from Swarthmore College in 1980. He lives in Washington, DC.

Dr. Singer joined the University of Maryland on February 2016. She received her PhD in 2014 in Engineering Sciences from the University of Poitiers in France. She has experience in studying analytically and computationally the radiative heat transfer and near-field radiative heat transfer in dielectrics, metals and doped semiconductors. She holds a Master’s Degree in Fundamental/Computational Physics from the Lebanese University in Beirut. Her research interests include heat transfer and its different mechanisms, thermal management systems and additive manufacturing.

Meghan Chapple
Director, Office of Sustainability & Senior Advisor, University Sustainability Initiatives
George Washington University
Ms. Chapple serves as director of George Washington University’s Office of Sustainability and is Senior Advisor on University Sustainability Initiatives. She has led GW through its comprehensive sustainability strategy process, and has established the university’s reputation as a hot bed for sustainability innovation, experimentation, and demonstration in and out of the classroom. She has nearly 20 years of experience working as a change agent for sustainability in the corporate and nonprofit sectors. Ms. Chapple advised corporations at SustainAbility, managed the business education network at World Resources Institute, and served in Americorps with Public Allies Chicago. She has an MBA in Corporate Strategy and a Masters of Science in Environmental Policy from the University of Michigan, and a BA in Environmental Science from Northwestern University.
Sally DeLeon

Ms. DeLeon facilitates progress toward campus sustainability goals through public reporting and policy analysis. She tracks and publishes sustainability metrics, supports implementation of the climate action plan, and advises campus stakeholders on carbon reduction strategies and sustainability rating systems. Sally earned an interdisciplinary master’s degree in Natural Resource Planning with a concentration in Environment, Society & Public Affairs from the Rubenstein School of Environment & Natural Resources at the University of Vermont. She completed Bachelor’s degrees in both Biology and Environmental Studies at Dartmouth College.
Chauncey Jenkins
Facilities Manager

Mr. Jenkins chairs the University of Maryland’s President’s Energy Initiatives Implementation Task Force targeted to implement and develop Energy projects to promote sustainability on UMD campus and real savings. Mr. Jenkins, is Co-Primary Investigator on an Energy Audit project that has been taking place on the UMD campus for the last three years. This project received the Region First ASHRAE Technology Award, and the best project award at the Appalachian energy summit in North Carolina at the end of August. Mr. Jenkins has been teaching students for several years addressing the hands-on practical application work of building systems, reducing energy consumption through energy auditing and ultimately saving money. Mr. Jenkins played a key role in the 2017 Solar Decathlon project of UMD, which accomplished major success in addition to many other contributions and participations in novel energy projects on and for the UMD campus.
Margaret Lo
University Sustainability Director
George Mason University
Margaret Lo joined the Office of Sustainability in 2011. Her responsibilities include strategic planning, leadership development, budgeting, and administration for the Office as well advancing the sustainable practices on campus. Margaret compiled Mason’s first Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System report to measure the university’s sustainability performance. Margaret received her Master in Business Administration from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and her Bachelors in Science in Business Management from Binghamton University, State University of New York.
